Lieutenant Les Arnold, 29, was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Mischievous, extroverted, strong and athletic, he was the class clown, an actor in summer stock, and a champion street fighter. Most ladies found his frequent flirtations and friendly demeanor to be charming and irresistible. He enlisted in the Air Service shortly after the U.S. declared war on Germany. He mastered stunt flying quickly and soon out- flew his instructors. Often AWOL and a general nuisance they quickly sent him to France to show other less skilled pilots the aerobatic tricks required in combat flying. Surviving the war and numerous illicit liaisons with the attractive indigenous females, Arnold returned home flying aerobatics in air shows, circuses and exhibitions while recruiting for the Air Service. Although he had little mechanical aptitude, Mitchell recognized his extraordinary flying abilities and selected him for bomber training. Arnold, along with Leigh Wade and Erik Nelson, participated in Mitchell's bombing demonstrations, sinking ships with pinpoint bombing accuracy far out at sea.
